A System-of-System Perspective on Information Fusion Systems

Systems Conversation with Ali Raz, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue University

Ali will develop a System-of-Systems (SoS) perspective to enable holistic design of an IFS which accounts for the various complexities arising from the interdependence of system design, operation, and policy considerations. Building on the recent developments in complex systems and system-of-systems research, Ali will discuss a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) framework for developing integrated IFS architectures with a command and control system example. The integrated architectures of IFS provide holistic and mission-focused representation of the IFS and facilitate a common mathematical representation of system design, policy, and operational variables. The resulting design space—developed as an agent-based model—remains extensively large and needs to be analyzed for interdependence. Ali will discuss machine learning techniques, in particular General Linear Models and Artificial Neural Networks, that allow comprehension of this extensive design space and help identify and quantify the impact of variations and interactions in the IFS design space. Furthermore, Ali will also provide an overview of on-going complex systems and system-of-systems research at Purdue University Center for Integrated Systems in Aerospace.
